I want to be Tony Hsieh when I grow up
One day, Trey sent out a request to the Twitterverse, “need internet shoe recommendations.”
I replied in my usual flowing, elegant prose, “Zappos, ftw!”
Minutes later I get an email, “Zappos CEO Tony is now following you on Twitter.” Wow. I’m honored. So I decided to follow him back.
In the first couple weeks that I was following him, he gave out several pairs of shoes, sent out a Twitter-only invite to the Zappos website redesign beta, and flew a follower and a friend to Vegas to have brunch with him and see the Zappos offices.
Then yesterday, when Tony met with the CEO of EBay, he opened up the floor to the Twitterverse.
Behold the power of Twitter. And the power of such a forward thinking leader. I hope to be as cool as Tony Hsieh when I grow up to be a CEO.
As a small caveat, there are some companies, that I think are doing a bad job (read: spamming twitterbots) using Twitter as a marketing/communication tool. But Zappos is doing it, and doing it well.
